When Chennaigaga was being created in 2009, we wanted the city’s old name Madras to be included in our Chennai souvenirs’ design bank. We also wanted one design to denote both Madras AND Chennai. After all, the city that was(Madras), is now the city that is (Chennai).
And so, we considered featuring some current Chennai landmarks that were also a part of Madras and our minds went quite naturally to one of the most popular landmarks here — the Marina Beach. As we thought about the beach, we zeroed in on the Napier Bridge. As children, many of us were always excited when we came across a bridge of any kind, weren’t we? And the Napier bridge has always been special to us Chennaiites.
Located close to the northern edge of the Marina beach, this bridge is over the top in its charm quotient and has even been featured in many a Tamil talkie.
Also, historically, much business and trade was conducted in north Madras which was the area north of the Marina. In fact, we wouldn’t be wrong in stating that ‘old’ Madras and ‘new’ Chennai are connected on the beachfront by the Napier bridge. This is why we captioned this T-shirt: MADRAS TO CHENNAI. It’s a poetic reference to the journey from Madras to Chennai.

This tee is back in stock now at chennaigaga.com in a soft cotton navy blue. It is a screen printed t-shirt with a high density print for the white Napier bridge. The bridge has a slightly different texture than the regular, flat screen print and needs a little more attention in maintenance. (Gentle cycle wash for under 20 minutes in the washing machine or hand wash is preferred, after turning the tee inside out, to protect the print)
We dare hope that the overall effect on the t-shirt as a design element will make up for the little extra attention in washing it!
Grab it HERE now before it dashes out of stock!
