Madras is my emotion
Namma Chennai has been called Chennai for a long time now, and yet, we often still call her Madras. This is especially true for those who left the city when she was still Madras and moved across borders, state lines and oceans in search of farther prospects. To them, Namma Chennai will always be called Madras.
When we think of the city as Chennai, we are clear that it’s current and recent.
When we think of the city as Madras, we feel it’s home. It’s that grand old city that carried a legacy.
A legacy of cricket, chess, cinema, beaches, filter coffee, South Indian cuisine, great academicians, stalwarts and familiar landmarks.
Don’t get me wrong.
The city still has all of it.
It’s just that Chennai isn’t brimming with the same colour of memories that Madras is.
Madras is the old name.
Chennai is the new name.
Madras is an emotion, they say.
Chennai is a Semma vibe, we say.
But we all agree on one thing. Chennai is worth all the celebrations for what she is today, and worth all the nostalgia as she continues to still be fondly remembered as Madras.
Madras is not just an emotion.
It’s MY emotion!
Ergo, the T-shirt. The design is a play on taking you back the old fashioned way to the Madras that was, so that you can flaunt it while celebrating the Chennai it is.
